Roku, a company known for thriving in a team environment, sought to create a workplace in their Shanghai office that truly reflected their culture and amplified it. As a group of diverse individuals with collaborative mindsets, they needed a space that fostered teamwork and innovation, allowing them to come together and collaborate effectively. Competing with giants in their field, Roku's workplace design needed to support their ability to innovate and differentiate themselves.

Drawing on our experience of helping Roku build its workplaces in China over the past four years, Space Matrix took Roku's global standards into account while infusing local elements to create a workspace that resonated with the local culture and Shanghai's vibrant atmosphere. The dominant hue of purple, Roku's brand colour, was used to create an open and inclusive environment, reflecting the futuristic and modern spirit of Shanghai.

The design of the Social Hub, strategically positioned for the best view, offered a space for meeting, work, relaxation, and social interaction. Multi-level step seating and flexible furniture facilitated communication and harmony among employees, fostering an open atmosphere of social communication. Diverse scenarios, such as phone booths, open collaboration spaces, and quick discussion areas, provided employees with different options for short breaks, communion, and discussion, promoting easy interaction and enhancing the sense of community. By creating spaces for social interaction and collaboration, the space nudges employees to extend their interpersonal circles and enjoy a fulfilling working experience.

To enhance office vitality, large glass facades were incorporated into the conference room, accompanied by purple and green hues in the suspended ceiling and curtain wall. The use of simple, textured materials and ample natural light created a relaxed and cosy environment that encouraged productivity and comfort for employees.

The transformation of Roku's Shanghai office truly mirrored its global guidelines and brand image while incorporating local elements that captured the essence of Shanghai's past and future. The efficient, convenient, and cosy workspace allowed employees to collaborate seamlessly and fostered an environment conducive to innovation.

By embracing Roku's culture of thriving in a team environment, the new workplace facilitated a strong sense of community and belonging among employees. Employees felt more connected and engaged, leading to enhanced productivity and a sense of unexpected surprise brought by the workplace.
